Who is doing this

JK-OS is one person: Jonas Kreutzer. The plural elsewhere on this site is a small vanity and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

I build things, mostly on my own, and for a while I built the kind of things everyone builds — the sort with onboarding funnels and retention metrics and a dashboard showing how many minutes a day people spent inside them. The number was supposed to go up. It kept going up. At some point it became difficult to explain why that was good for anyone involved.

Why this instead

Because the interesting constraint turned out to be the opposite one. If an app can only work when you are physically next to another person, almost every standard growth technique becomes unavailable. No infinite feed, because there is nothing to scroll. No engagement loop, because the goal is that you put the phone down. No notifications engineered to pull you back, because pulling you back is the failure case.

What is left is quite small, and quite hard to fund, and much more fun to make.

The politics, briefly

I do not think being tired is a personal failing to be solved with a better morning routine. Most of what gets sold as self-improvement is a way of making you responsible for conditions you did not choose. The apps here take a side about that — mildly, and with jokes, because a manifesto that cannot laugh at itself is just another thing demanding your seriousness.

Elsewhere

I also take on occasional commissioned work — the sort of thing you can see under other work. It pays for the useless things, which seems like a fair arrangement.
